To be perfectly honest I could never understood the the novels of Jane Austen. As a non-native English speaker, I struggled with the antiquated language and could never understand the etiquette in the relationships between the characters. It was just too much work to be a satisfying read.
However, I always felt a bit of a fraud for never finishing a single Jane Austen novel. You see, I live in the Roman/Georgian city of Bath and it is virtually impossible to escape this omnipresent writer. There is of course the Museum of Jane Austen on Gay Street. There's the Jane Austen Festival with a very eye catching parade of people dress in Regency costumes, there are numerous tea houses and gift shops all catering to those who'd buy anything tenuously linked to Pride and Prejudice or any of the other novels.
